clarence - The Clarence Blog Engine
Publisher review:clarence - The Clarence Blog Engine Clarence is a new PHP-based blogging system that uses flat files and directory structure to create categories and posts rather than needing a database backend. It's based on PHPosxom, which in turn is based on Blosxom (which is written in Perl). On systems with older, slower hardware, like my Sawtooth G4 Mac, there's no real reason to justify installing an industrial-strength SQL server like MySQL or PostgreSQL when everything can be done statically. Clarence runs without a database. There's not even really a way to hook one up. The whole point of Clarence is that static pages are better than dynamic pages. I change servers a lot, so having everything in the filesystem makes things much easier. The simpler the system--as long as it still works--the better. If you're looking to set up a blog (and have a good text editor like BBEdit) and know what you're doing writing HTML, you should check Clarence out.
